The 10th annual Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista commissioned William Kentridge to illustrate Ornellaia 2015 Il Carisma. The art project, launched in 2009, by Italian winery, Ornellaia, selects an artist each year to create an artwork to interpret the distinctive character of the individual vintage. The artist created a site-specific artwork for the Ornellaia Estate, customized a limited series of 111 large-format bottles, and designed a special label for each case containing six 750ml bottles of Ornellaia.
William Kentridge has interpreted Ornellaia 2015 Il Carisma with drawings on the wine labels referenced from pages of old Italian cash books found in flea markets and second-hand shops in Tuscany.
The images on the Ornellaia labels are essentially about the work of making wine, and mainly of the vendemmia, the grape harvest.
“The secateurs come from a memory of the one occasion I took part in a Tuscan vendemmia, when with my family I spent six months in San Casciano outside Florence. This made me understand the human labour involved in making the wine; though what I remember most strongly is the pleasure of the lunch prepared in the vineyards by the local farmer’s wife. A depth of flavour made by the combination of work and terroir. The aspects of wine-making that combine both manual craft and mechanical processes suggested the transformation of people into machines and machines into workers. This is part of an ongoing series of drawings and other work about human labour. The drawings are done on pages from various old Italian cash books found in flea markets and second-hand shops in the Tuscan area.” William Kentridge
An auction of nine lots of William Kentridge‘s special-edition labels and bottles of Ornellaia are to be sold by Sotheby’s on 23rd May 2018 during a gala evening at the V&A – Victoria & Albert Museum, with proceeds in aid of the museum.
Ornellaia has donated to date almost 2 million euros to art foundations and museums across the globe, including: the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York; Whitney Museum, New York; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Royal Opera House, London; H2 Foundation, Hong Kong and Shanghai; Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan; AGO, Toronto; Beyeler Foundation, Basel; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
The Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista project was curated by Bartolomeo Pietrimarchi (Curator, MAXXI, Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo) and Maria Valicata.
