London Landscape

Green infrastructure – the network of green spaces that nourishes a city – is as significant for the future of a functional London as major infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and HS2.

Landscape highlights for this year’s Open House London programme show that successful projects work with what is already there.

Take a look at some of the projects with landscape at their heart:

Interventions:

• Derbyshire Street Pocket Park – A community pocket park structured around a central ‘raingarden’. The space was previously a dead-end road with only one function – car parking. It features a range of sustainable urban drainage features aimed at reducing pressure on London’s sewer system.
• Alexandra Road Park – Unique modernist sculpted linear park, integral to the iconic Alexandra Road housing estate. The innovative landscape design with series of outdoor ‘rooms’ has now been restored. Original Tenants Hall overlooking park also open, with information about the estate and park.

Large-scale transformations:

• King’s Cross Public Realm – King’s Cross, a 67 acre development previously known as the ‘railway lands’. Includes 20 heritage industrial buildings/structures, new homes, retail, offices, restaurants, Central St Martins, a school, public realm including KX Pond and Skip Garden.
• Beyond the Olympic Park – the real Lea Valley from industryto art – A riverside stroll down the banks of the river Lea from Hackney Wick to the Thames at Leamouth, offering a chance to enjoy its unique character before the post-olympic regenerated world finally catches up with it, and explore some wide range of arts and creative locations and settlements that it increasingly supports. In the company of Ralph Ward, visiting professor at University of East London and Michael Owens, director of Bow Arts, joint founders of London Urban visits.
