In this year’s third international symposium, Urbane Künste Ruhr look into the possibilities, tasks and challenges of dealing with art projects in public space, using the example of the two big exhibitions in public space – EMSCHERKUNST in the Ruhr area and skulptur projekte münster.

National and international curators, scientists, authors and experts discuss the different dimensions of this topic in keynote lectures, panels and round-table talks.

Marius Babias, Aram Bartholl, Dr. Brigitte Franzen, Sabine Himmelsbach, Stefan Kaegi, Vasıf Kortun, Philipp Misselwitz, Susa Pop, Hanno Rauterberg, Christian Saehrendt, Tino Sehgal, Philippe Van Cauteren, Beat Wyss and others will speak on the following subjects:

  • Globalisation of public space – art as a catalyst for development
  • Publicness in the times of the Internet – virtuality and reality of space
  • Publicness, art and politics – society’s requirements and the freedom of art
  • In times of events – the public and residents, publicness and participation

The symposium will be curated and chaired by: Katja Aßmann (Urbane Künste Ruhr) and Melanie Bono (LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur).
