Artist partners Heather and Ivan Morison created a performance, Sleepers Awake, for Milton Creek, Sittingbourne, Kent for Artlands, a contemporary art programme which explores North Kent’s identity through a series of public realm commissions – responding to and engaging with the landscapes, heritage and people. Sleepers Awake, involves the creation of a second sun at night in a marshland near Sittingbourne, on the Thames estuary, where the low-key post-industrial landscape is being turned into a country park. The work itself was a large helium balloon, flown a few hundred feet from the ground, that glowed like a second moon. The work references the Bach sonata Sleepers Awake with the lines “Wake, Awake, for night is flying” (Wachet Auf, Ruft Uns die Stimme) as a theme for regeneration and the work itself.
