Walter Jack Studio creates furniture and architectural elements for indoor and outdoor public spaces buildings and landscapes. For Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford they have created Woodland Colour – a sculptural woodland of twenty identical arcs illuminated by twenty uplighters. The placing and the colouring of the arcs is informal – but highly contrived. Wherever you choose to stand – within or outside the ‘woodland’ – you will only see a few of the colours. The result is almost a conjuring trick and creates a change of mood as the whole space seems suddenly re-decorated in a different hue. Scattered blocks of raw oak add somewhere to sit and add a counterpoint to the vertical elements, a visual base to the pieces.
‘Whatever we chose to put in this central space would be experienced in the round – travelled around and seen from all sides. But we wanted to create a space within – and to draw people in. So this is a spectacle and an interior. And a surprise – a place worth exploring – a ‘play space’.
