“In a radical change in the idea of what public art should be. The city of São Paulo recently declared that they were not to approve any further out-dated public sculptures with the justification that this kind of art belongs to the XIX century, adding nothing to the urban environment.” Teixeira Coelho
Inside Out/Outside In (De Dentro e De Fora) is an exhibition of global urban art in the Museum of Art of Sao Paulo (MASP) in central Sao Paulo, Brazil. It includes eight of the major current activists in the genre of urban art: Swoon (United States); Defi, Chu, and Tec (Argentina); Point (Czech Republic); Remed, JR and Space Invader (France); and Bijari (Brazil) who will all work in a collaborative dialogue. The group of international artists will be in Sao Paulo for a month long residency to create a series of site-specific installations.
The MASP architecture, designed by Lina Bo Bardi in 1968, is the central axis for graffiti, photography, video, sculpture, painting, mural paintings, collages, animations and installations. The exhibition happens inside and outside the museum and in the city environment. The central idea of Inside Out/Outside In is to cause the audience to experience a sense of rediscovery and feeling of diversity – the feeling of not knowing where the art starts and where it ends. It may be everywhere – under the stairs, behind a frame or into a hole, both inside and outside the museum. The concept is to experience the collaborative work as the dialogue of São Paulo living with Art – the public participation within various levels – the collective installation – the dialogue with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture and the urban and human landscape of the city.
Activities during the exhibition include:
- Art, the museum and the city. A workshop about public art, urban art, creative economy and the future of the city. 21 September, MASP.
