Material Worlds: Sotheby’s at Sudeley Castle. 28 July – 30 September 2011

Since 2005, Sudeley Castle has staged a series of exhibitions of contemporary art. Material Worlds follows Vertigo and Reconstruction and is a collaboration with Sothebys showing commissioned, one-off and limited edition work by eleven artists, architects and designers from the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Lebanon.

Selected by Janice Blackburn. Works include: Paul Fryer’s sculpture The Kingdom (47Hz) ; Ingo Maurer’s ethereal LED Table, which illuminates the Sudeley chapel and J.B. Schmetterling with handmade butterflies; architect David Adjaye’s monumental granite Giza bench; Amanda Levete’s sculptural Drift bench in cement and limestone; Andrea Salvetti’s glittering cupola, Mazzolin di Fiori, composed of 1,500 aluminium flowers; Tord Boontje’s powder‐coated aluminium Rain Table and Chairs; Ambrose Burne’s steel Gate; Omer Arbel’s 19’s, garden pools made of recycled copper; Lebanese duo, Bokja’s giant Queen Bees in recycled metal and vintage fabric highlight the depletion of the world’s bee population.

Two works specially commissioned for the exhibition are Laura Ellen Bacon’s Form of Intrigue, an installation of woven ash twigs, which cascades down the castle ruin. Three silver‐plated sculptures by Stephen Johnson, Now Isn’t That Lovely series: Madam; Owl and Pooh, are situated in the knot garden.

  1. Certainly looks like a wonderful location with an amazing collection of art. I enjoyed making the butterflies, and feel very proud to see them here…
