The Floating Cinema will spend this summer navigating the canals and waterways around the Olympic park in East London. Created by Hackney-based architects Studio Weave (Je Ahn and Maria Smith) and artist duo Somewhere (Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie), this customised narrow boat hosts a programme of free on-board screenings, canal tours, talks and workshops. The Floating Cinema will also present larger scale outdoor film events for canal side audiences and informal drop-in Open Thursdays where you can watch rare films selected especially for the Floating Cinema by Somewhere.
The Floating Cinema launches on 1st July at Springfield Marina with an outdoor movie night including music by “I Am the Mighty Jungulator”, DJ’s, Twilight projections, food from the Sandwich Barg
The Floating Cinema is a continuation of UP Projects’ Portavilion programme of temporary pavilions for London’s public spaces. It will form part of the Create 2011 summer festival and is commissioned by The Olympic Delivery Authority and funded by Arts Council England.
Date: June to September 2011. Visit www.floatingcinema.info to see the Floating Cinema artists’ blog, full event details and bookings.
